Many people feel very nervous when they are higher that we are meant to be! This could be on a high building or, for some, even on a chair. But for some people that nervousness turns into a fear that is very debilitating and actually stops you doing things. When you are high up…

Panic starts to overcome you. You don’t want to look but you have to and when you do ….

You lose perspective – everything looks warped. One minute the ground looks further away and then suddenly its really close. And then

Your legs begin to wobble – they suddenly feel they don’t belong to you – they feel very heavy and you can’t lift them. They want to …

Throw you off. Obviously, you don’t really want to throw yourself down the stairs or jump off the bridge but it feels like that. You feel …

Horror and you need to hold on — to the rail, to the person next to you. You just need to hold on until you …

Get Relief. Nothing will make you feel better until you’re on the ground again. And when your feet touch down and your muscles relax you can then breathe again and you’re mind clears. You feel sad because there are many things you are not able to do – like going in a lift, climbing a bridge or visiting places like New York, Paris, climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge or the O2 in London. But it doesn’t have to be like this. There are several things you can try to overcome your fear:

  1. Consider the likelihood of actual harm resulting from the situations you feel. For instance, skyscrapers, airplanes and roller coasters are specifically engineered to be as sturdy and secure as possible. It is very easy to forget how unlikely it is to suffer any harm from these activities.
  2. It is a good idea to take up activities to help you relax such as yoga and deep breathing. It is also a good idea to remove caffeine from your diet as this will result in making you feel less high-strung and more relaxed.

In addition – you don’t have to suffer for the rest of your life because I can help you:  We aren’t born with our fears and phobias so if you have a fear of heights you have learnt it so it is possible to unlearn it too.
