Summer is over and now it is time for kids to return to school. Yet, many children feel anxious and stressed about returning to their school environment, with Covid-19 still lingering in the background. Feeling nervous and having jitters is actually normal. Kids don’t know what to expect, they might have a new teacher they don’t know, or be in a totally different classroom with different rules. Regardless, as a parent or caregiver, you can help them ease back into school by recognizing their anxiety and using homeopathic remedies that might be helpful for them.

One of the reasons children worry about going back to school is the fear of the unknown. They might attend a new school, be worried about making friends or bumping into bullies, they might think about all the work they will need to do or exams, or even worry about wearing masks and anything related to Covid-19. It can be a very stressful time for parents and children, so the best way to combat this is to identify their anxiety or stress. Signs that they may be experiencing anxiety may include appearing more clingy, fidgeting, complaining of stomach aches, changes in their eating and sleeping habits, getting upset, and crying, among others. It’s best if children talk about their feelings and understand what is troubling them. As you listen, without judgment, validate their feelings as this will make them feel better.

Another way to tackle kid’s stress and anxiety in this area is homeopathy. Homeopathic remedies can help your child emotionally and physically. All you need to do is find the right one for them. Here’s a list of some homeopathic remedies for back to school anxiety:

Aconite: This homeopathic remedy is for children that are extremely afraid of going back to school and have symptoms such as panic attacks, restlessness, shortness of breath, palpitations, and cold sweats.

Gelsemium: This homeopathic remedy is for an anticipatory anxiety, such as their first day of school, a school event, or other big situations. These events can seem really big for kids and they may feel weak or apprehensive as they approach such an event, like an exam or performance in front of classmates or school community. They will close up with fear and can stutter, feel confused, have nausea, stomach aches or even diarrhea.

Argentum Nitricum: This homeopathic remedy is also for an anticipatory anxiety, but can be a little more dreadful as children get emotional and use their imagination for scenarios about things that may occur at school. It’s a remedy to help children understand that they will be ok, as they may feel an extreme, overly exaggerated sense that they might not be ok. Your child might ask you a lot of questions to something and this can coincide with fear of heights, failure or claustrophobia.

Lycopodium: This homeopathic remedy can help children with their fear of failure. This is a big fear to address because they may show it with being overly confident or putting others down. Dong this might make them feel good about themselves, when in reality they are very sensitive and not feeling as confident themselves.

Arsenicum: This homeopathic remedy is for children that need to control themselves and their environment. They may be excited about school and be super organized with all their new school supplies, but they may appear restless or fidgety. They are trying to control everything that has to do with school so that everything goes well for them. Deep down, they overly worry and this can be very exhausting for them, even so that they may wake up at night feeling anxious. Having a warm bath before bed, along with warm drinks and blankets help to ease this anxiety.

Pulsatilla: This homeopathic remedy is for children that are having separation issues and anxiety. Your child may not want to get out of the car or cling to your hug as you say goodbye. They might cry or fight to come back to you. They also might stay close to their teacher during school and have a hard time being with their friends at break time or lunch. They may also experience overactive thoughts or dreams as they go to bed at night.

Calcarea Carbonica: This homeopathic remedy can help children when they are feeling very overwhelmed. Starting school isn’t easy and there’s a lot to learn in the first days, so too much information at once can feel overwhelming. It takes time to take it all in, so be patient with children. This remedy will help get them to where they need to be in their own time. Remember that they might not ask for help, so experiencing too much at once can make them feel stressed, along with being stubborn and lethargy.

To use homeopathy as your remedy for back to school anxiety, you can use a 30c potency. Have them take 1 dose, which is 1 pill, a day and observe how your child is doing. Children can take up to 4 doses a day and once their symptoms improve, you can take it away. If you observe any changing symptoms, then you might need to choose another remedy. If you don’t know where to start with homeopathy for your child, use Gelsemium.

These homeopathic remedies can do wonders for your child as they start school. They will feel refreshed, calm, and very confident.
